WLHP tenant Aileen puts best foot forward in charity boost
A West Lothian Housing Partnership (WLHP) tenant has walked 1500 miles in six months to raise money for charity.
Aileen McDonald has been walking near her home in Bathgate every day since July to raise money for a range of good causes.
She’s taken 3.6 million steps and walked 1500 miles in that time – the equivalent of walking from Bathgate to Madrid, the capital of Spain.
And she’s raised more than £800 in the process.
Aileen, 59, raises money for a different charity each month – including Diabetes UK, Sands, Prostate Cancer, the Salvation Army, the Samaritans and the Mental Health Foundation. She’s also entered an online beauty pageant to raise money for good causes too.
Aileen, who works in a canteen, said: “I like helping people and I do a lot of walking anyway, so If I can raise money for charity at the same time, that’s great.
“I’ve taken 3.6 million steps and walked 1500 miles since July. I aim for 12,000 steps a day. The most I’ve done in a day is 36,000 – which is over 14 miles.
“Most people sponsor me per step but I try to wear a charity t-shirt when I’m out so sometimes strangers will come up and donate.
“I also entered Beauty Pageants Northern Ireland – and won ‘most photogenic’ category in the ‘classic’ age group. It was another good way to help make some money for NHS UK, Headway and Helping Hands.”
Aileen, above centre, also took part in Beauty Pageants Northern Ireland to raise money for charity
Lynsey Fotheringham, WLHP Head of Housing, said: “It’s always great to hear about our tenants going out of their way to help others. Everyone at WLHP wishes Aileen all the best in her charity efforts.”
Aileen added: “It’s been great. Walking has helped my mental health. It’s helped me lose weight and keep me healthy – and helped me raise money for good causes too. I’ll keep it going as long as I can.”
